Hello readers, welcome to another edition of Books I’m Into, where I link up with Anne from Modern Mrs. Darcy and share my reading list from the past month.
This month was a bit of an odd reading month for me. I’ve taken a short break from many of the series that I’ve been working through and picked up some books in genres that I wouldn’t normally tend towards. Have you read anything out of the ordinary recently? Let me know if you have any great recommendations!
Books I finished this month:
Follow Santiago as he leaves his home in Andalusia in a quest to find treasure and his true purpose in life. Full of colorful characters and countries, this book explores the different ways that people strive towards their dreams. I had heard of this novel from a couple of bloggers and decided to check it out when I found it on my library’s new books shelf. A fun, easy read, though a bit more philosophical than I expected.
Do you ever wish that you were a better public speaker or that your interviews went more smoothly? Do you feel that your life is controlled by stress? In this fantastic book, Amy Cuddy identifies many of the reasons that we feel anxious and powerless and how we can overcome them. I love the insights Cuddy gives on body language in this book. As a musician, I am well aware that body position and language is important, but I never knew how much it could affect my attitude and presence! Definitely a book to check out.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if a pitcher threw a baseball at the speed of light? Or, how fast can you hit a speed bump and live? Apparently Randall Munroe’s readers have! As a former employee of NASA Munroe seeks to answer many conundrums such as these. His combination of physics and wit makes this book feel way more fun than a science-based book should.
My husband and I listened to this book on a long trip and loved it. Definitely not the type of book I would tend towards, so it was a fun surprise. If you have sons, this would probably be a hit in your house!
I do a fair bit of driving to and from my piano student’s homes, so I’m always looking for a good audio book. Mysteries keep the drive interesting, so when a good friends recommended Dorothy L. Sayers as an Agatha Christie era mystery series I was super excited to check it out. Cloud of Witnesses is the second in the Lord Peter Wimsey series and it definitely kept me guessing! If you want a good clean mystery set it 1920’s England, you’ll have to give this one a try.
Books I’m currently reading:
Advertised as “a dystopian novel for the digital age” this is not, at first glance, a book that would catch my eye. But when you throw in book lovers, mystery, and a recommendation from Modern Mrs. Darcy, I decided to take a chance. So far I’m only a quarter or so in and I’ve found the book intriguing and aggravating at the same time. Parts of it have been a bit hard to get into, but then again I’m still hooked enough to wonder what’s going to happen next…we’ll see!
Have you ever read any of these books? What have you been reading lately?
